AUGUST 2019: Thousands of firefighters battle wildfires on Greek island

More than 220 firefighters (inset right) were sent to tackle the blaze on the island of Evia, northeast of Athens. The fire ripped through the village of Kontodespoti (pictured) as residents were evacuated (inset left). Two other fires raged in separate areas, causing a thick layer of smoke to blanket the Greek capital. The public have been repeatedly encouraged not to engage in outdoor activities that could cause fires by Greek authorities.
